Important Biosecurity and Facilites Information

As you know, an operation to remove animal pests from Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands is underway. The long term success of this project depends on you to prevent reinvasion. Please read the plan & prepare information before your trip. We strongly reccomend that you read the info contained here along with the information below:

Camping in an area without pest animals is a unique experience!

Before you go!:

  • Check all your gear for rats, mice and ants.

  • Stored away tents and other camping gear provide an ideal place for pests to hide.

  • Take extra care if you have Argentine ants where you live

  • Clean your footwear and camping gear, removing soil and seeds.

  • Pack food into sealed containers to keep pests out.

  • Open supermarket bags are unacceptable.

NOTE: You may be met on arrival by a ranger to ensure you are pest-free.

Taking your own boat or kayak?

  • Before you depart check your vessel for stowaway pests - rats, mice and ants.

  • Look for signs of rodents - droppings and gnawed items eg. wiring etc.

  • Keep fresh bait and/or set traps on your vessel or where it's stored.

  • Report sightings of pests on the island - phone 0800 DOC HOT line (0800 362 468). See www.treasureislands.co.nz for further information.
