BUMPER BIRD MONTH
“January is turning out to be a bumper month! “ says Motutapu Restoration Trustee Dr Bruce Burns. Motutapu is rapidly becoming home to more and more endangered species – thanks to all the trees planted by our volunteers, and due to the past DUAL participants who have supported this work in their entry fees.
Today 35 pateke (brown teal) will be released on Motutapu. These birds are highly endangered and almost disappeared on the mainland where once they were very common. We have another 16 shore plovers settling in to life on Motutapu, as well as two new island-born chicks (from last year’s releases). Also born on the island, new Takahe chicks are now also starting to show themselves!
Thanks, Duellers, for helping bring back the birds.
