Individual / Team – 1km swim, 26km MTB, 10km run 

Kicking off with a 1km swim in the sheltered bay of Home Bay. The swim will be two 500m laps at the southern end of Home Bay before you get out of the water and on to your mountain bike.

Starting with a climb up and out of Home Bay to pump up the heart-rate. From Northern Junction you will head south on the central road for the first time, this gravel road is fast flowing with great 360 degree views.

Heading across the causeway and onto Rangitoto Island the landscape changes to beautiful native bush and awesome lava flows. Here you'll start the slow but steady grind to the top of a 600 year old volcano, at the top quench your thirst and take in the view for a second or two. From here it's a fast downhill to the furthest point on the course. The 10km ride back to Motutapu is flat and fast, rolling past the historical baches under the shelter of the towering Pohutukawa trees.

Back onto Motutapu you'll head onto farm land tracks for the final 4km. As you climb to the highest point on the Island (121m) you will be treated to some magic views of the Hauraki Gulf and back across to Auckland City. The final 2km is all downhill before your smiling face crosses the finish line back at Home Bay.

Lace up and onto the run section, starting off with a small climb on a gravel road which will take you past a beautiful regenerating native bush and get you some height for the vast views to come. At the top you head onto the trails where you will be able to stride out on a gradual downhill. Make sure you tilt your head up to see the best view of the event base and beyond.

From the bottom there's another steady foray up the main route on Motutapu with an aid station to look forward to at the top. From there it's a gentle downhill out to the southern end of the island on farm trails. Now on the home stretch, return to the event base up and over another hill with more rewarding views at the top and onwards as you make your gracious decent to the finish line. Time for an ice cold Speights!

Age Limits: 

  • 15yrs to 18yrs – Guardians permission required.

  • 12yrs to 14yrs – Child must be accompanied by guardian.

  • Under 12yrs – not able to participate in this distance.
